When outfitting a compact rotary-action polisher extension length has little impact on machine balance and comfort.  This is because there's not an issue with rotational balance. True tight-area sanding & polishing just became a reality.
Small-diameter buffing pads are rapidly becoming must haves for tight-area sanding and polishing tasks. When mounted to compact 1", 2", and 3" polishing machines, our backing plates, extensions, & pads eliminate much of the difficulty and stress associated with critical tight-area work.

   There are two unique backing plates available:

32mm Vinyl Face 1125
32mm Velcro Face 1125G

   Specifications:

These backing plates feature 1/4-20 female plastic threads, and are rated to withstand up to 13,000 RPM. They measure 32mm in diameter (1-1/4"), and are 3/4" tall. You will need an adaptor or extension to install these onto your machine. We offer these backing plates in three thread sizes:


1/4-20 thread : Factory size

5/16-24 thread: Requires drilling & re-threading / $3.00 additional fee


• M6-1.0 metric thread : Requires re-threading / $1.50 additional fee


   Use an adaptor or extension to mount these plates onto the machine.
The adaptors & extensions we offer for purchase are simple, rudimentary devices. They are made using a piece of all-thread, one or two jam nuts, a pair of washers, and a slip-on sleeve (designed to hide the exposed length of threaded stud). They have not been safety or long-term tested. We are offering them as a convenience, so that these backing plates can be better utilized. By all means, if you are in need of a tried & tested mounting utensil, we encourage you to search out a better option, or build one yourself. Always use caution, particularly when the installation of a smaller diameter backing plate (or an extension) causes the machine's rotating assembly (counterweight & componenets) to become exposed. Keep fingers, hands, aprons, sleeves, & toweling away from the rotating assembly! 

   Choose the ideal adaptor or extension. 

 Adaptor 
Mounts the backing plate directly onto the machine.
No deliberate lengthening of the space between the backing plate and the machine.

Short Extension
Increases the distance between the backing plate and machine approximately 1".
When using the 2" plate on the Rupes TA50 or Chicago Pneumatic 93629, extensions
longer than 1" should be used with caution, and at very low machine speeds only
 
• Medium Extension
Increases the distance between the backing plate and machine approximately 1-1/2".


Long Extension 
Increases the distance between the backing plate and machine approximately 1-3/4" or more.
For rotary-action machines only! Installation on orbital and random orbital polishers will increase
stress on the spindle bearings, and negatively impact machine balance (making it difficult to control).



   These plates can be mounted to a variety of machines, including:

• Rupes® BigFoot iBrid Nano • M6-1.0 metric thread

• Rupes® TA50 2" Random Orbital Sander/Polisher • M6-1.0 metric thread

• Harbor Freight's Central Pneumatic® 93629 2" Mini Orbital Air Sander
  (These feature either M6-1.0 or 1/4-20 thread)

• Mirka® MR-30 3" Bulldog Rotary Polisher • 1/4-20 thread

• Griot's® 10739 3" Random Orbital Sander/Polisher • 5/16-24 thread
 

If your machine uses M6-1.0 metric thread:
-The distance from the peak of one thread to the next will be 1mm.

-There will be approximately 26 threads per inch.
 
If the machine uses 1/4-20 thread:

-The distance peak-to-peak of six threads will be 1/4".
-There will be 20 threads per inch.

Conversion Notes
It is relatively simple to alter the threads yourself:
Simply grasp the tap or drill bit in one hand (using a crescent or tapping wrench), while turning the backing plate with the other hand.

To convert to 6mm x 1.0 thread:
This size is similar in diameter/pitch to 1/4-20 thread, making it very simple to alter via tapping. When tapping to 6mm x 1.0 thread, keep in mind that the threading is not fully formed, as some of the plastic material has been removed via the original tapping. To avoid damaging or weakening the threads, do not overtighten or repeatedly install/reinstall the backing plate.

To convert to 5/16-24 thread:
This thread size is somewhat larger in diameter than the factory 1/4-20 thread, and therefore requires drilling prior to tapping. If you do not have a handheld drill, you can easily power the drill bit by hand (twist via crescent wrench). To simplify the process, drill in two steps: Use a small drill bit, then drill again using a 17/64" drill bit. Then tap.
